What’s the Big Deal with Community?
by Kate Dodd
Let’s be honest — community sounds great in theory, but in practice, it can feel risky. Most of us have a natural resistance to being fully known. We like to appear strong, composed, and in control. Vulnerability feels uncomfortable. What if people see the real me — my doubts, my mess, my weaknesses — and decide I’m too much or not enough?
But here’s the truth: you can’t be deeply loved without being deeply known. God designed us to need one another — not because He couldn’t do it another way, but because He knew our faith would grow best in the soil of authentic relationships. When we let down our guard and invite others into our story, we experience grace in real time. We learn that we’re not alone in our struggles, and we begin to see how God uses ordinary people to shape extraordinary faith.
Community also forces us to confront how we’re spending our time and what we’re living for. Are we building lives centered on comfort and independence, or on Christ and His people? Our calendars often reveal our priorities. If our schedules are too full for meaningful relationships, we might be missing one of the primary ways God intends to grow us as disciples.
There’s an arrogance that whispers, “I don’t really need that in my life.” It sounds strong, but it’s actually a form of self-protection — a pride that keeps us from the humility of walking with others. Yet Scripture reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17). You can’t sharpen yourself in isolation.
Community isn’t just a nice add-on to the Christian life — it’s central to it. One day, when we stand before Jesus, it won’t be our independence that matters but our faithfulness. And much of that faithfulness is forged in the context of relationships — the messy, beautiful, sanctifying gift of doing life together.
So what’s the big deal with community? Everything. Because it’s in community that we experience what it means to truly belong — to God and to one another.
How can you live out your everyday faith in the middle of what you’re facing today?
