Persistent Prayer: Putting a Stake in the Ground

There’s a difference between praying throughout the day and intentionally setting aside time to pray. Both matter—but they serve different purposes in our walk with God.

Praying throughout the day keeps us aware of His presence. It’s the breath prayers we whisper between moments: “Thank You,” “Help me,” “Be near.” These small conversations remind us that God is with us in the ordinary and the unexpected.

But there is also a deeper kind of prayer—when we intentionally put a stake in the ground. It’s the moment we choose to pause, to show up before God with focus and expectancy. This kind of prayer is less about habit and more about humility. It’s born from the realization that we need Him. Because when we rely on our own strength, we quickly reach the end of ourselves. Our self-sufficiency leaves us empty. But when we come to God, acknowledging our weakness, He meets us there.

Daniel modeled this beautifully. Even in exile, surrounded by pressures and distractions, he prayed three times a day—faithfully, consistently, expectantly. His rhythm of prayer was an anchor for his soul, and Scripture tells us that God called him highly esteemed (Daniel 10:11). Daniel’s example reminds us that God honors those who seek Him with steady and humble hearts.

Prayer is not about getting the words right; it’s about showing up again and again with a heart that depends on God. The more we pray, the more we recognize our need for Him—and the more we experience His faithfulness in return.

Reflection: Where have you stopped praying—where discouragement, disappointment, or distraction have silenced your conversation with God? What would it look like to put a stake in the ground and start again today?

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6
