The Power of Community When Life Feels Unpredictable
Learning to Trust God When Control Is Not an Option
Noelle is quick to name something many feel, but most don’t have the courage to say out loud.
“Well, I like to be in control. I can definitely admit that.”
Control brings comfort. It offers structure and predictability, especially in a world that often feels uncertain. For Noelle, control showed up in small, everyday ways. The things she could manage. The spaces she could keep orderly. The routines she could depend on.
But as she grew older, she began to realize something else just as clearly.
“It can be hard sometimes because there’s not much you can actually control.”
Life has a way of reminding us of that truth. Circumstances shift. Outcomes remain unknown. And the things we care about most are often the very things we cannot fix or influence.
During a season when uncertainty felt especially close, Noelle found herself holding tightly to the few things she could manage.
“It’s nice just having a clean bed to come home to,” she says. “It’s like a clean space in my mind and something I’m in control of.”
She pauses, keenly aware of the pattern.
“Ah, there’s that control word again.”
That self-awareness became an invitation. Not to shame herself for wanting control, but to notice what she was really longing for. Peace. Stability. Assurance that things would be okay.
Faith When Answers Are Not Clear
There are moments in life when effort does not guarantee an outcome. When preparation does not promise success. When wanting something deeply does not make it happen.
“You may not get the part,” Noelle says, reflecting on her time in theatre. “You’re going to feel disappointment.”
Disappointment has a way of exposing where we place our hope. When things do not go the way we expect, we are left with a choice. We can tighten our grip, or we can learn to trust.
For Noelle, trust became a conscious decision.
“I remember I was like, okay God, I’m just gonna trust you.”
That trust did not remove the uncertainty. It did not immediately change the circumstances. But it did change how she walked through them.
“He was always with me,” she says. “Whenever I felt lonely, I was like, it’s fine.”
That quiet confidence points to something deeper than optimism. It reflects a growing belief that God was present, even when outcomes were unclear, and control felt out of reach.
Faith, for Noelle, was no longer just about believing the right things. It became about learning to rely on God when she could not control the outcome or see the next step.
Where God Met Her Through People
While Noelle was learning to trust God personally, she was also discovering something just as important. God often shows up through people.
Youth group became a steady place during a season when many things in her life felt unpredictable. What began as routine slowly turned into a refuge.
“It’s just having people your age support you and having adults shepherd you,” she explains. “It feels like one big family.”
That sense of family mattered more than she realized at first. Youth group was not a place where she had to have everything figured out. It was a place where she could be honest, supported, and encouraged.
“It’s a good support system. Definitely.”
In moments when she could not control what was happening around her, she could depend on the consistency of community. Leaders noticed when she was quiet. Friends noticed when she needed encouragement. Week after week, the rhythm of gathering, worship, and conversation became grounding.
“My leaders and the other girls encouraged me and built me up.”
Through that encouragement, Noelle began to see community not just as a social connection but as a gift from God. A way He provided strength when she needed it most.
“Just having a community of people that have the same beliefs as you can really help.”
Faith That Deepened Through Shared Experience
As Noelle continued to show up, her faith began to grow in ways she didn’t expect. Summer camp created space for reflection, worship, and deeper connection. Removed from daily distractions and surrounded by peers and leaders pursuing the same thing, faith began to feel more personal.
“Shared experiences and shared conversations really help you grow and connect.”
Those moments mattered because they weren’t experienced alone. Faith wasn’t something Noelle was navigating by herself; it was something she was discovering alongside others who were also learning, questioning, and learning to trust.
Over time, she began to notice how deeply those environments were shaping her.
“I feel like I’ve seen my faith grow because of all of the amazing things I’ve seen happening through the church.”
Winter retreat continued that growth. Time away together created space for honesty and vulnerability, making it easier for Noelle to open up, listen, and recognize God’s presence through worship, connection, and conversation. Being surrounded by others who were also learning to trust God helped her see that faith is often formed most deeply in shared spaces.
That same truth became especially real to me during a season when my dad was very sick. In a time when so much felt uncertain and out of my control, the church showed up in tangible ways—through prayer, presence, and care. It was a powerful reminder that God often meets us through His people, carrying us when we don’t have the strength to carry ourselves.
Faith was no longer just something Noelle believed. It was something she was living—together with others.
Choosing Surrender Over Control
Slowly, Noelle began to see a pattern in her own life. When she tried to control outcomes, peace felt fragile. When she leaned into faith and community, peace felt steadier.
“Keeping small, consistent things and making sure you have a good community of Christian people really makes the biggest difference and will help you so much.”
Community did not eliminate uncertainty. But it changed how she carried it. It reminded her that God was at work even when answers were delayed. It showed her that faith was not about having control, but about trusting the One who does.
“I just feel like it’s rewarding,” she says.
Rewarding not because life became easier, but because she learned she did not have to walk through difficulty alone.
An Invitation for All of Us
Noelle’s story is not about a single moment of transformation. It is about a gradual shift from control to trust. From self-reliance to faith. From isolation to community.
It is about discovering that God often meets us most clearly through people who show up, encourage us, and walk alongside us when life feels uncertain.
Youth group became a steady place where faith could grow. Summer camp and winter retreat became spaces where belief became personal. Community became a tangible expression of God’s care.
Her journey reflects something true for all of us.
We want control. We want clarity. We want to know how things will turn out.
But faith invites us into something deeper.
It invites us to trust God when outcomes are uncertain, and to lean into the community He provides when we cannot carry everything ourselves.
For Noelle, that has made all the difference.
And for the rest of us, her story is a reminder that when control slips from our hands, we are often being invited to place our trust somewhere far more secure.
